It seems that there is always some type of road construction going on around us. It can be disruptive but ultimately helps to improve our roadways and make for a safer and more effective driving experience. But to remain safe, let’s discuss some tips for driving during the construction process.
The first to remember is that during construction, you should not operate your vehicle at the same speed you would normally do on that stretch of roadway. Road construction often involves men, machinery and other distractions.
In many cases, the normal flow of traffic is disrupted. Lanes may be blocked off or there may be a need to change lanes or traffic flow. Temporary barricades may be in use and there may be a great deal of distractions caused by work lights, personnel or equipment moving in and out of traffic.
So again it is very important to stay alert when driving during the construction. Obey all posted speed limits and keep in mind that these limits have most likely been lowered from what they were previously.
So slow down as much as possible in order to avoid distractions and potential problems. This is not a time to be casual about your driving habits. Stay alert and be responsible at all times.
Since construction often involves workers and other personnel, your driving habits can put others at risk.
Also keep in mind that in many cases, congestion will increase as a result of this construction. So avoid tailgating and keep your distance. A slower operating speed will help this as well.
Stay alert to changes in traffic patterns. The route you take one day through the construction may change the next day. And expect that the road conditions may change as well. Some sections you may be routed through can have a rougher or more worn surface.
Sometimes traffic needs to be directed on the shoulders of a roadway so expect that this surface will not be as smooth as the regular roadway. If there are law enforcement or other personnel helping to direct traffic, pay attention to them and abide by their direction. It is for your safety as well as others around you.
And keep in mind that new speed limits are usually established in this area and that you can be subject to fines if you don’t abide by them. So stay as safe as possible while driving during the construction.
