There are other factors which can dictate whether or not you will be required to obtain SR-22 insurance.  If you are involved in a DUI, DWI or other serious moving violation, this coverage may be required.

Also if you are a repeat traffic offender who gets too many tickets within a short period of time then you may have obtain SR-22 insurance as well.

When the insurance company issues this coverage, they are required to file an SR-22 form with the state you operate your vehicle.  If you fail to make premium payments, the insurance will cancel your coverage and notify the state.  If this occurs there will most likely be severe penalties and it will be more costly to obtain this kind of coverage.

So if you find yourself in a situation where you need to get SR-22 insurance, it is a good idea to be very diligent in keeping the coverage active.  If you do so for the time period allotted, then you can convert your policy to a regular one and typically save some money.

But in the meantime consider that without the availability of this kind of coverage, you would not be able to legally operate a vehicle.  This could have serious consequences on your ability to get to work and get on with your normal daily activities.  SR-22 insurance is designed to protect the driver and other citizens on the road.  It is a very important consideration.
